A Bayesian Paradigm for Direct Phase Determination

A self-guided tour of phase determination by
entropy maximization and likelihood scoring.

This tour describes some aspects of the tree-directed phasing paradigm developed by Gérard Bricogne. It is based on actual calculations using the MICE program, (Bricogne and Gilmore, 1990 Acta Cryst. A46:248-297) for a one-dimensional crystal of HgCl2, together with examples from the phase determination for B. stearothermophilus Tryptophanyl-tRNA synthease (Doublié, et al., 1995, STRUCTURE, 3:17-310)

The one-dimensional example is simple enough that all values of the electron density and its transform can be appreciated in the same figure.
